100,000 Miles

We bought an '88 Chevy Nova awhile back that I had some skepticism about as it was nearly 20 years old and had a salvage title, but it's been a really good car. It's pretty much a carburated Toyota Corolla with a Chevrolet badge, which is probably why it runs today.

We've since put 30,000 miles on it driving around town and to and from California, and we recorded a video to commemorate its odometer reaching six figures:

Thanks, Nova. You're the best $700 investment I've ever made.

the one that explains why men don't ask for directions

Asking for directions from a passerby or another driver is even worse than trying to use a map.

It puts your ignorance and weakness on display.

It's like asking for help opening a jar. If you're not strong enough to open it, you don't deserve what's inside.

the one where you teach your husband to drive

How to give instructions: Be careful about how and when you use the word "right". Here is an example of a conversation you don't want to have:

she: Up at the corner, turn left.
he: So you want me to turn left?
she: Right.
he: Okay, I'll turn right.
she: No! I want you to turn left.
he: But you just said "turn right."
she: No. Turn left!
he: Left??
she: Right!

Note: Here are some handy alternatives to use instead of "right": "Bingo!", "Precisely", "Correct", "Correct-o-mundo", "Indubitably", "Oh yeah, baby!", and "Fo' shizzle my nizzle".

the one with the oBLOGatory post

I've been trying to at least update this thing once a month.

Let it be known far and wide that I have succeeded.

Sorry if you were expecting more.

Here's a picture of Sadie snapping up a piece of popcorn to ease your disappointment.

The one with the Y-Chromosome

At a quick glance of the family blogs to which we subscribe, it's the wife who keeps it up to date. Angela's had me write the last posts, but like the proverbial Austin Powers, I've lost my mojo. I'm not really sure what to update the blogging world on what's new with our life. It would be like having a meeting to plan on how to cut down on unnecessary meetings.

So... updates...

I got a raise at work and a bonus. It was a small one that I wasn't expecting, but because of it, I'm finally making more money than I've ever made in my life. Yay! It's still not very much, but it's the thought that counts.

Angela's sister and her husband bought a house, so Angela's down in the Provo area right now helping her unpack. She'll be back Tuesday evening. I miss her. It's times like this when you realize how much your spouse does for you socially. I can't imagine being in a relationship where you don't communicate with your spouse. She'll have been gone for four days, and I've just felt lonely.

Left to my own devices, I'm sure I'd be running around feral in my skivvies. I even made a Bacon Explosion on Saturday; it filled my stomach with meat and my heart with plaque. It was delicious.

Life is good.

The One with the New Car

There's a comedian that I like called Emo Philips. I say 'called' and not 'named' because I'm pretty sure the first name is a stage one. His real name is probably something like 'Edsel' or 'Wilbur' or something. Anyways, he has this one liner that goes "I bought some new underwear. Well, new to me."

We kind of did the same thing, only instead of skivvies we picked up a replacement for our station wagon. It's a 2003 and the newest car that either of us have ever had by 10 years, so we're excited about it. Anyone want to buy a cheap old car?

Valentine's Day was fun, too. We celebrated a little early by going to the Draper Temple open house and had Rodizio's for dinner. If you've never been, it's well worth it, believe me. You just have to be willing to gorge yourself a little bit otherwise you won't get to taste every bit of deliciousness they bring by the table.

Brazilian Barbecue is not for the weak of belly.

The temple was beautiful. It was set on a hill and really visible from most of the area, and the interior was gorgeous. The amount of time that goes into the finishing work amazes me, but it is an incredibly special place. More than anything that we did while we were down there, going to the temple with Angela was by far the most special to me.

I know that sometimes I'm not the most romantic person, and I'm not really into traditions or holidays, but I love Angela. She laughs at my jokes even when they're not funny; she handles our finances; she cooks delicious meals; she takes the time to make our house a colorful home where it would otherwise be empty with white walls. She even gets my nerd humor. She makes me want to be better than I am.

Anyways, I hope everyone had a happy Valentine's Day.

the one with the bad driver confession.

Hi. My name is "Cracker White¹". I am a bad Driver. I'm 115 days good driving, but I still feel if I were to run just one stop sign, it would all come back to me. It's a slippery slope.

Some people can tailgate one or two cars and forget about it--but not for others like me. It's never enough. Faster, faster, faster! More, more, more!

Once I thought I was just a social bad driver, but now I know, probably because of genetic factors, this disease will always be with me.

¹ This is an actual, verbatim confession from a real recovering bad driver. This is a person who is actually a well-known Californian often noted for his bad driving. To protect his anonymity, we've changed his name from Joe Hauptman to Cracker White (not his real name).
